You have been given three short documents:

• “Turning the Tables: South Carolina’s Petition to Congress Against White Slavery,” San Francisco Bulletin, November 8, 1860, 1.
• Gov. William Hale, “Governor’s Message,” Farmers’ Cabinet, June 9, 1858, 2.
• “Anti-Slavery Demonstration,” North Star, March 25, 1854, 2.

Please choose one of the above, and write a 2-3 page (double-spaced, 1″ margins, 12 pt. font) document analysis discussing what it reveals as an historical source. Your analysis should succinctly summarize the main points of the article and/or the main argument (or arguments) that the writer/speaker is advancing. Your analysis should also provide a broader context for understanding the document. In order to do this, you will need to carefully consider the date of the article, possibly think about the newspaper in which it appeared, and also explain some of the important references, such as key names and/or events that someone unfamiliar with the intricacies of 19th century US politics would not necessarily know. (You want to do this selectively, focusing  on what is most important to convey; I don’t expect you to explain every reference in detail.) You will likely need to do a bit of research online, but I am not expecting footnotes unless you choose to go into greater depth (or of course if you choose to quote something directly, but I don’t encourage doing this is a document analysis.)
