Read the 1790 essay by Judith Sargent Murray (link on the syllabus and in e-reseves). This work clearly reflects a departure from the gender ideology of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. How do Murray’s views about women differ from—or completely contradict—those of her Puritan predecessors? Are there other ways in which this document reflects some of the remarkable changes that America (and Europe) underwent in the late 18^th century?
