Document Analysis

You have read Laurel Thatcher Ulrich’s overview of the lives of New England women (1650-1750) and Elizabeth Reis’ discussion of Puritan views concerning women and witchcraft. Read the 1790 essay by Judith Sargent Murray (link on the syllabus and in e-reseves). This work clearly reflects a departure from the gender ideology of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. How do Murray’s views about women differ from—or completely contradict—those of her Puritan predecessors? Are there other ways in which this document reflects some of the remarkable changes that America (and Europe) underwent in the late 18th century? Write a 2-3 page analysis of Murray’s text in which you consider these questions.
